Blogging Mistakes

Are you struggling to achieve results with your blog? The first step is to know what mistakes you’re making so that you can fix them.

When I started this blog I wanted to make sure that I did it right so that I could get the results I wanted. The main result I’m looking for is how to engage with people who are interested in what I have to write. So one of the first things I did was to try to find out what mistakes I’d made on previous blogs so that I do not make the same mistakes here.

Whilst doing my research on other blogs/websites I tallied up over 50 mistakes. Most of them I’ve made at one time or other. Rather than keep these to myself I decided to share my research with you.

I could have just regurgitated what was already written on these other sites but did not want to dilute the content. What I have done is listed the mistakes and referenced the top websites with their tips for avoiding these mistakes.

This is going to be a great tool for me because I will use it as a checklist for future reference. So here’s what I found out?

Mistake #1. You Don’t Write For Your Reader

  • You don’t know your audience
  • You’re in the wrong niche
  • You’re out of touch with your readers
  • You’re not sure what your blog is about

I want to help people who are new to blogging get started with their first blog. Or maybe you’re like me and you’ve some experience of blogging but want to get it right this time.

Mistake #2 You Don’t Have A Compelling Title

  • Your headline is not catchy
  • You don’t spend enough time thinking about your blog headline

What do you think of the title of this post? I’m still learning of course but I wanted a title to attract people interested in finding out what they might be doing wrong with their blogs.

Mistake #3 Your Introduction is poor

  • You first paragraph does not have a hook

I know that it is important to have an introduction that encourages the reader to keep reading. Hopefully if you’re reading this it has worked to some extent.

Mistake #4 Your Blog Is A Dead End

  • You don’t have an optimized op in form on your website
  • You don’t have an email strategy
  • You don’t have a call to action (CTA)

Before I published my first blog post I made sure I had an email opt in form on my site. When you enter your email address you details are captured in my autoresponder. That means when I publish future blog posts I can send it to you direct to your inbox. So why is that so important? If you think I deliver great content you’ll not want to miss future posts. I don’t know about you but I get frustrated when I’ve found great information on a website. At a later date I may remember the content but don’t remember what site I saw it on. I can spend hours searching sometimes to no avail.

By the way the autoresponder I use is Getresponse.

Mistake #5 You Just Regurgitate What You See In Other Blogs

  • You follow the crowd
  • You just copy what others are doing in your niche

Other blogs in your niche are a great source of content for your own blog. In this blog I’ve found content from other blogs that I thought would be useful. I could have just created my own “10 Mistakes”, “15 Mistakes” etc, but wanted to do something a bit different. There was so much great content I did not want to do them an injustice. I know that I like to book mark sites that I find useful but sometimes they get lost. When I come back to this page I’ll be able to just look at the “mistake” I want to address and go straight to the relevant website that has the solution.

  • You never respond to comments
  • You don’t participate in conversations either on your blog

This is something I certainly didn’t do very well before. I hope you will comment and I will make sure I respond. I want this to be a two way conversation because we can all learn from each other.

  • You’re a lone ranger
  • You don’t read other blogger’s blogs
  • You don’t interact with other bloggers relevant to your content
  • You don’t guest post
  • You don’t reference others

I didn’t really understand this before. I didn’t realise how important it is to interact with other bloggers in my niche and enter into conversations. Whilst researching for this blog post I commented on some of the blogs I’ve shared in this post. As you can see I have also referenced them to add value to the content in this post. If you’re a blogger I hope you leave a comment and add your opinion too.

Mistake #8 You Post Too Much Or You Don’t Post Enough

There is a lot of conflicting information out there about how long your post should be. As I wrote this post I realised that it was destined to be very long. I decided to break it down into smaller posts so that it is easier to digest. However, my intention is that you can use this post as a resource that you can come back to. Thanks Sean for visiting my blog. I am very honoured to have you comment so positively. Since finding your blog I visit often because there is so much great content and value. I think my biggest learning from making mistakes is the experience and knowing that actually you can do things better. And I think I agree that no matter how much we learn we will continue to make mistakes.
